Exercise doesn’t make you thin? What’s up with Time Magazine?
Posted on 15. Aug, 2009 by eva in Blog
Time Magazine had an article last week by John Cloud that talked about some new exercise research that gives the impression that exercise may not give the weight loss benefits that had been previously thought. San Diego sports medicine doctor and Coastal Sports & Wellness medical director John Martinez, M.D. gives his take on the Time Magazine article as he breaks down how the magazine writer misses some of the bigger findings of the research. Apparently he’s had to break his response up into a couple sections to post.

Hydroxycut withdrawn from market – San Diego Personal Trainers Rejoice
Posted on 07. May, 2009 by jmartinez in Blog, Boot Camp, San Diego Personal Training
Personal trainers in San Diego and throughout the US as well as other sports fitness and medical professionals felt a moment of satisfaction when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the withdrawal of Hydroxycut dietary supplements from the U.S. market on April 30th. The FDA announced that there had been at least 24 cases of liver damage and one death linked to use of Hydroxycut supplements.
One concerning factor is that the majority (about 70%) of the reported cases required hospitalization, which may suggest that the actual number of reported more minor liver damage cases were never reported by doctors or the consumers never sought medical care but stopped the Hydroxycut supplements on their own.
From a fitness and health professional standpoint, most personal trainers, not only in San Diego, but elsewhere, will agree that most dietary supplements may only provide temporary or limited results.
The overwhelming majority of medical studies for weight loss demonstrate that the best way to start a weight loss program and to keep the weight off is a program that focuses on proper nutrition as well as following a sound, safe and regular exercise program such as a fitness bootcamp class or working with a personal trainer to develop an individualized personal training program

San Diego Personal Trainer Reveals the Top 5 Get Fit For Your Wedding Diet for Carmel Valley Brides to be
San Diego personal trainers know that one of the most important ways to get the best fitness results is to set a deadline. Now that its spring time, an obvious deadline is the upcoming wedding season
Carme has worked with a lot of people and one of the most important components in getting her clients the best results around is by piggybacking on some sort of deadline. There is no better example of this than with a new bride to be. It’s amazing what happens to women as soon as they set a wedding date- they are ready and willing to do whatever it takes to get in their dream dress and inspire awe in all those who attend the most important day of their life.
But a bride still needs a dietary blueprint in order to get the job done. After all nutrition is 80-90+% of building a leaner, sexier physique. The following diet guidelines have produced both body and life-changing results for many fitness clients. The typical results can include the loss of 2 to 3 pounds of unwanted and ugly body fat each week which means a reduction in at least 1 clothing size per month. Don’t forget! The focus should be on improving your overall health, fitness, body composition, and performance, NOT weight loss!
The Get Fit Bride Tips:
EAT to Decrease Fat and Boost Metabolism
Tip#1- Maintain Hydration:
- Morning – Drink 2 cups (at least 8 oz) of water first thing in the morning and try to continue to drink at least 1 to 2 cups of water about every 2 to 3 hours through out the day.
- Remember to also drink 1-2 cups of water or sports drink for every 15 to 30 minutes of moderate to high intensity exercise to keep peak physical performance and to prevent dehydration during fitness workouts.

San Diego Fitness Boot Camps for Beginners
Some people that are new to boot camps can be a little put off by the typical boot camp format of a fitness instructor that barks out orders and has the campers run around under stress and in circles for the entire class.
However, there is good news! San Diego’s is that there are fitness boot camps that feature cardio, fitness and strength training designed for both the beginner and advanced boot camper.
Beginner boot camp workouts can highlight strength and fitness training that is not quite as physically demanding initially as the advanced boot camp workouts, but will still provide the same great workout. Beginneers can decide to stayin the beginner’s fitness boot camp until they feel it necessary before going on to a more advanced level boot camp workout.
Our San Diego boot camps feature personal training staff that are professionally trained and understand how to design and alter a workout for differnet ability levels from the beginner boot camper to the veteran fitness fanatic.
Most would prefer another method of getting into shape before trying a boot camp workout.
Though a good number of boot camp workouts are designed to accommodate all fitness levels, it may be in your best interest to enroll in a fitness boot camp for beginners as opposed to putting off enrollment until you feel you are in good enough shape. If you participate in a fitness boot camp on a regular basis, chances are you will begin to notice that your body is shaping up very quickly, probably within the first couple of weeks.
Even for beginners, boot camp workouts are far superior to other types of exercise routines for many reasons. With a fitness boot camp you will get into shape quickly and lose any unwanted weight; additionally, these fitness workouts will help you improve your cardiovascular health, as well as your physical endurance, muscle strength, and your body’s flexibility.
All of these health benefits are good for everyone, but especially those who participate in athletic activities. For athletes, physical endurance and a healthy heart are essential, as is flexibility. When your body is flexible, you have far less risk of suffering a serious injury, and this is always a plus when you are participating in sports, or any other type of physical activity. You can accomplish all of this and more if you choose to enroll in a boot camp for beginners.
Fitness boot camp workouts are the best workouts for weight loss, as well as getting into shape, and staying healthy. This is true, no matter what your fitness level is!
